These Dyes Will Give You The Playful Dirty Blonde Hair You Love

a woman with dirty blonde hair

Blonde hair is not a universal color. Depending on the style, blonde can mean a bleached platinum, a highlighted mixture or a natural golden look. Dirty blond hair is a very natural look for those who want a lighter appearance without the stark contrast that bright blond hair often brings. Don't let the term "dirty" fool you, though. This is a lovely and natural hair color that looks good with many skin tones. And since the majority of adults lose their blonde hair over time, adding back a dirty blond color can give hair a natural boost back to the color you sported when young.

Comparison Table

Dirty Blond Hair Dyes

1. Why Consider This Color?

Dirty blond hair is a naturally soft color for those who wish to lighten their hair. Unlike platinum blonde, which may require lots of bleach or a strong developer, dirty blonde is a subtle color you can get with less extreme dyes and colorings. By mixing darker tones with lighter highlights, a dirty blonde look can also be very multi-dimensional.

2. Is This Color Better for My Hair and Scalp?

One of the reasons dirty blond hair is preferable to bright or platinum blond is that the ammonia or hydrogen peroxide required to get a bright, light blond can cause serious skin reactions. High quantities of bleach or extra strength developer are not recommended for all types of hair, either, while gentle formulas in more dirty blond colors can be used by anyone.

How We Reviewed

We looked at six dirty blond hair dyes that you can easily buy outside of a salon. We considered them in light of their final look, their price, and what comes in the box. We also looked at what other users thought of the colors to get an idea of how they work for different people.

Overall Price Range

You can expect to pay between $7 and $15 for a box of hair dye. The more expensive brands tended to have a better final look; though that wasn't always universally true. Others reasons for a greater expense may include more natural ingredients or a longer-lasting color job.

Clairol Nice'N Easy Original

Features

Clairol provides a light dirty blond hair color that looks completely natural. This formula has both highlights and lowlights that last for up to 8 weeks. One application kit includes color formula, activator, and conditioner. Because it uses 3 salon tones, each of the highlights blend together for a natural mixture of dirty blond hair tones. This is a gentle, long-lasting formula that does not burn or require additional treatment.

Final Look

We loved the way Clairol looked. It was so natural our best friends couldn't tell where our natural hair color ended and the dye began!

L'Oreal Paris Superior Preference

Features

L'Oreal Paris has a long history of success dating back to the 1970s. In addition to offering numerous shades, their dye protects against color fading. A typical application only takes 25 minutes, and it can last 2-3 weeks longer than typical for this type of dye.

Final Look

The quality of this hair dye shows in obvious ways. Unlike many other dyes, this one preserves the shine and texture of hair. While we didn't think the final look was quite as perfect as Clairol, we did love the way our hair felt.

Where to Buy

Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Hair Color Creme

Features

Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Hair Color Creme uses avocado, shea, olive, and grape seed oils to help keep your hair healthy during the dye process, which is perfect for moisture and shine. There are multiple different color options available for a low cost. The colors are accurate and match the description well. Everything you need is in the box, including one of our favorite conditioners. We wish this conditioner was available for everyday use!

Final Look

Unlike many other hair dyes, Garnier Nutrisse smells amazing. Since it's a gentle dye, the quality is great for any hair type. That said, this is the shortest-lasting dye of any we reviewed.

Where to Buy

Revlon Colorsilk Haircolor

Features

This particular product is very inexpensive for an ammonia-free dye. It includes a 3D color gel technology that lets you achieve different tones for a multi-dimensional look. Revlon works well for gray hair especially while still leaving a healthy shine. It works very well with just one application, and you're unlikely to need to redo it for quite a long time. This is a longer-lasting color than average.

Final Look

Here is where we get into the weeds just a bit. One of our reviewers loved the color: her natural hair was a darker grey. Everyone else felt it gave their hair a slight orange tone, and everyone got a darker final color than they expected. For the price, this is a good dye; but you'll need to make sure it looks good on your hair.

Vidal Sassoon Salonist Hair Colour Permanent Color Kit

Features

For permanent hair dye that blends well, Vidal Sassoon's color kit comes with a brush that makes identifying individual strands easy. By using the brush-and-bowl kit, roots can be treated independently from the entire head of hair. This is an effective way to keep hair healthy. For full control over all strands of hair, this is one of the best methods of dyeing hair. This is perfect for graying or blending hair.

Final Look

This was hands-down the best color job of our review. The final color was absolutely perfect, even for people with different starting colors, and the depth of the color dimensions was amazing. We also felt this made our hair feel healthy and light, which was a huge plus.

L'Oreal Paris ExcellenceAge Perfect Layered Tone Flattering Color

Features

This dye is specially designed to cover grayer tones, and it does that beautifully. Pro-Keratine gives your hair volume, which is nice if you have thinner, older hair. The application brush makes blending quite easy to accomplish, and the formula is made to tone out in layers to give you natural-looking highs and lows. The color lasts a good month.

Final Look

For our very grey-haired reviewers, we were very pleased with the end result of ExcellenceAge. It looked beautiful, multi-toned, and natural. For those with a bit less grey hair, the color was still fine but just a bit darker than we expected.
